I took my camera to school and the kids went nuts! There is something about a camera that builds excitement. So many of my students wanted their picture taken and they love to make silly faces. Personalities really come to life through a lens.
One way I can build an educational bridge would be to have students take a picture of something that is important to them. I have found that you really have to dig deep to go beyond photos of people. If you look around and into your life, you can learn a lot about yourself. I'm thinking that if a camera is put into the hands of your students, you could learn a lot about them. Having kids take pictures and then having them write about them...would be a good lesson. So many times, we make lists of things to write about. But put a picture along with those things...and the door opens up. Looking at pictures can trigger feelings and just might make writing more fun.
I think I'll have my students take a picture of something this weekend and have them bring the photo to school next week. This could be the start of something exciting.
